Is it a church? Is it a museum? No, it’s the Gothic Temple. This intriguing structure blends history, mystery, and architectural wonder. Welcome to a journey through time. We are standing in front of the captivating Gothic Temple.

The Gothic Temple stands as a testament to London’s rich past. Its foundations are intertwined with tales of knights, legal battles, and artistic revivals. The Temple Church is closely linked to the Knights Templar. This medieval Christian military order played a crucial role in the Crusades. They protected Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem.

The Temple Church served as the English headquarters for the Knights Templar. It symbolized their influence and devotion. The round church design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This was believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Imagine stepping inside the Gothic Temple. You are crossing an item off your life list. The atmosphere is striking. It is like entering another era. Solemn effigies of medieval knights add a haunting air of mystery.

The round nave is the most distinctive feature. It is inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Knights Templar chose this design. It symbolizes eternity and divine perfection. The soaring arches create a contemplative atmosphere.

Scattered across the nave are nine life-size stone effigies of medieval knights. These figures represent prominent members of the Knights Templar. They showcase the craftsmanship of the medieval era. They evoke the chivalric traditions of the Templar order.

The Knights Templar managed routes in and out of the Middle East. This brought them great wealth and power. It also brought them great enemies. Rumors spread of nefarious conduct and sacrilegious initiation ceremonies.

One notorious story involves Walter Bacheler. He was the preceptor of Ireland. He refused to follow the Order’s rules. He was locked away for eight weeks and starved to death.

The circular staircase of Temple Church hides a secret space. It is a penitentiary cell where Walter Bacheler spent his final days.

In 1307, King Edward II took control of the church. He gave it to the Order of St John, the Knights Hospitaller. The church was rented out to lawyers. The Inner Temple and Middle Temple shared its use. They still do today.

The Temple Church escaped damage in the Great Fire of London in 1666. However, German incendiary bombs set the roof on fire on May 10, 1941. The fire spread quickly. The organ and wooden parts of the church were destroyed.

During renovations, elements of the 17th-century renovations by Wren were found. These were put back in their original positions. The church was rededicated in November 1958.

The Temple Church has always had two clergy. They are called the Master of the Temple and the Reader of the Temple. The Master of the Temple is appointed by the Crown.

The Temple Church has two organs. One was built in 2001. The other was built in 1924. Film composer Hans Zimmer chose the Temple Church to record parts of the score for Interstellar. The Temple Church’s organist, Roger Sayer, played the organ.

Temple Church is also known as the Round Church. It is also called the Knights Templar Church. Its prominent role in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code earned it the nickname The Da Vinci Code Church.

The Temple Church’s fame extends beyond its architecture. It is tied to the Magna Carta and the U.S. Constitution. It serves as a bridge between British and American legal traditions.

As you leave the Gothic Temple, remember its layers of history. The echoes of knights, the whispers of legal scholars, and the melodies of its famous organ. It is a place where the past resonates. It is a place that enriches the present.
