“Gospa od obrane”, a small white church, stands on a hilltop just outside of Dubrovnik. From this vantage point, it commands a stunning view of the Dalmatian coastline. Its weathered stone facade tells a timeless story of faith and resilience, a tale woven into the fabric of Dubrovnik’s history. The church wasn’t always here, though.

It owes its existence to a time of danger, a time when the very survival of Dubrovnik hung precariously in the balance, in the year 1667. A fierce earthquake, a devastating blow that left Dubrovnik in ruins, shook the city to its core. The threat of invasion loomed large, and Dubrovnik’s people, fearing the worst, turned to their faith.

In the midst of despair, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary stood on the hilltop. It was a place of solace, a beacon of hope in the darkness. It was a fragile symbol of belief – the very thing that held the city’s spirit together. The people of Dubrovnik, humbled by their plight, made a vow. If the Virgin Mary protected them, if she shielded their city from invasion, they would build a new, more monumental church in her honor.

Their prayer was answered. The Turks, who had threatened to invade, unexpectedly withdrew. It was a miracle, a gift from the Virgin Mary herself. True to their vow, the grateful citizens of Dubrovnik constructed the magnificent church, its dedication a tribute to the Lady of Deliverance – Gospa od Obrane.

The church has been a constant presence on that hilltop ever since, its silhouette a reassuring sight for the people of Dubrovnik. It stands as a reminder of their faith, a testament to the power of prayer, and a symbol of the city’s enduring resilience, a resilience forged in the fires of catastrophe.
