Could a simple toll tower give rise to a vibrant community? Here in Goseburg-Zeltberg, a northern district of Lüneburg, the answer is a resounding yes. Goseburg-Zeltberg takes its name from a medieval toll tower, much like the Hasenburg in Lüneburg’s south. This area, bordered by the Ostumgehung in the north and the Ilmenau river in the east, stretches down to Lüneburg’s old town. Goseburg-Zeltberg’s history predates its namesake tower, reaching back to the Bronze Age. The Zeltberg hill holds a wealth of prehistoric and early historic burial sites, testaments to Lüneburg’s ancient inhabitants. Among the finds is a “flanged axe” from around 1900 BC, evidence of an early settled farming culture. Lombard urnfield graves further enrich the area’s archaeological tapestry. Goseburg-Zeltberg transitioned from ancient burial ground to a bustling industrial hub around the turn of the 20th century. A Portland cement factory, an ironworks, and a slaughterhouse shaped the district’s identity. While some of these industries have faded, their legacy remains. The former Keulahütte site has been redeveloped and the old slaughterhouse made way for the Bezirksregierung (district government). Modern Goseburg-Zeltberg blends industry, administration, and residential life. The Hamburger Straße, connecting to the A39 autobahn, is a major artery. Industrial businesses, like the former Johnson Controls plant (now part of Yanfeng Automotive Interiors), still operate in the north. Administrative offices, such as the tax office and police, reside in the south. At the heart of Goseburg-Zeltberg, around Zeltberg hill, lie the historic worker and factory settlements. The spirit of community thrives here. The first Goseburg-Zeltberg Stadtteilfest (district festival) took place in 2024. It was a donation-based event held on the LSK Hansa grounds, showcasing the collaborative efforts of local institutions and residents. From ancient burial sites to industrial growth and a vibrant present, Goseburg-Zeltberg reflects the enduring human connection to place.
