The Gopher State Railway Museum isn’t just a museum. It’s a vibrant community project. Run entirely by volunteers these passionate individuals dedicate their time and skills. They preserve these incredible pieces of history. Their tireless work ensures these relics of the rails live on.
Look around you. Notice the gleaming stainless steel of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy 4711 Silver Crest and 4713 Silver Forest coaches. Built in 1940 these streamlined beauties once graced the Burlington’s tracks. Now awaiting restoration they whisper tales of bygone journeys.
But the stories go deeper. See that unassuming-looking boxcar? That’s SRBX 23 a former Pennsylvania Railroad car. Transformed into a mobile workshop it holds the tools that keep this museum running.
Then there’s Manitoba James J Hill’s private car. A remarkable piece of history. Originally built in 1880 it served Hill during the construction of the St Paul Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway and later the Great Northern Railway. Its journey is extraordinary. After retirement it was repurposed as a guesthouse. Eventually it found its way here to the Gopher State Railway Museum. Its restoration is a significant undertaking.
Explore further. Discover the Soo W725 a wood truss rod car with a fascinating history. Or the Wisconsin Central coach 1954 a testament to early steel coach construction. Notice the Railway Post Office car. Once carrying vital mail across the country it now serves as a workshop.
Even the seemingly humble CB&Q 14534 waycar holds a fascinating story. This drover’s car from 1871 boasts a nearly 100 year history. It carries the secrets of countless cattle drives. Its journey included time at the Minnesota Transportation Museum before finding a home here.
And don’t miss NSP 4 a restored locomotive. Once working at the St Paul High Bridge power plant. This locomotive carries the iconic image of Reddy Killowatt. It represents a unique chapter in Twin Cities history.
