Hidden within the bustling streets of Kensington lies a sanctuary of prayer and contemplation. This is the Carmelite Priory of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Simon Stock. For 150 years this priory has been a beacon of faith in the heart of London. Its presence is felt not only within its walls but throughout the community it serves.
The Carmelite Priory is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to a centuries-old tradition. The friars dedicate their lives to prayer and spiritual reflection. Their commitment is evident in the serene atmosphere that permeates the entire space. Think of the quiet dedication that has shaped this place for so long.
Step inside the Carmelite Church and your eyes are drawn upwards. Above the tabernacle shines the ‘Cross of the Triumphant Christ’. This magnificent cross is a masterpiece. It stands two meters tall and 1.5 meters wide. Dr Guillem Ramos-Poquí an artist and expert in sacred art created it.
He drew inspiration from 13th-century Italian art. The cross depicts Christ with arms outstretched. He looks directly at the viewer his wounds visible. Mary and St John flank him inviting us to join their contemplation. The smaller panels around Christ depict scenes from his life and resurrection. These smaller panels reflect various artistic styles from throughout history showing the richness of artistic traditions within faith.
Father Iain Matthew ODC reflects on the cross’s meaning. He speaks of the living Christ whose wounds are a testament to his enduring love. The cross reminds us that Christ’s sacrifice is not merely a historical event. It is a present reality. He invites us into his embrace. He asks us to trust in his love.
Ramos-Poquí’s artistic journey is fascinating. He holds an MA from the Royal College of Art. He also has a PhD in Fine Art Painting from Barcelona University. He was even Head of Fine Art at Kensington and Chelsea College. His expertise in icon painting is showcased across many churches in London and Dublin. For years he has also served as a reader and Eucharistic minister in the very church where his magnificent cross stands.
The Carmelite Priory isn’t just about art though. It’s a place of community a place of service. The friars minister to the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St Simon Stock. They welcome all who seek solace and spiritual nourishment. They offer a space for prayer reflection and connection with the divine. Let the quiet dignity of the Carmelite Priory speak to your soul.
