“A chapel modelled on a French masterpiece – right here in Melbourne?” a surprised voice might ask. Yes, indeed! This, my friends, is the Good Shepherd Chapel. This beautiful building holds within its walls a story that whispers of humble beginnings, unwavering faith, and a dedication to serving those in need. The Good Shepherd Chapel, built in 1871, wasn’t always a place for community gatherings and tranquil reflection. It was born from a need, a sanctuary for the Good Shepherd Sisters and the women and girls they protected. The story begins back in 1863 when four courageous Good Shepherd Sisters embarked on a journey from France to Melbourne, their mission fueled by compassion. Their goal? To offer solace and a safe haven to women and girls facing hardship. Finding their purpose in Abbotsford, they established the Abbotsford Convent in August of 1863. As their community blossomed, a need for a dedicated space for worship emerged. Thus, the Good Shepherd Chapel was envisioned. Designed by Thomas A. Kelly, the chapel took inspiration from the motherhouse of the Good Shepherd Sisters nestled in Angers, France. Laid in 1870 and inaugurated in 1871, the chapel, initially known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, stands as the second oldest edifice within the Abbotsford Convent precinct, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Good Shepherd Sisters. However, time, as it often does, took its toll. In 2010, the chapel’s doors closed, but not for good. It underwent a significant restoration, reopening in 2012 with its original features lovingly preserved and enhanced with locally sourced materials. Today, the Good Shepherd Chapel stands as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and enduring faith. Owned by the Good Shepherd Sisters and managed by Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand, it serves as a tranquil haven for all, a place where history and hope intertwine.
