While the Gladstone Park church may not have the same rich history as the Abbotsford Convent’s chapel many parallels exist. That chapel built in 1871 by the Good Shepherd Sisters is a significant Victorian landmark. Four Good Shepherd Sisters arrived from France in 1863. They offered support and safe housing to women and girls facing hardship. The Sisters established the Abbotsford Convent. A church was needed to serve the growing community of Sisters and the women under their care. The original chapel known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception was designed by Thomas A Kelly. It was modeled after the Sisters’ mother house in Angers France. The foundation stone was laid in 1870 and it opened on April 30 1871. It’s the second oldest building in the Abbotsford Convent precinct. It underwent extensive renovations closing in 2010 and reopening in 2012. This restoration ensured the chapel continued serving its community. Original features were carefully restored using local materials whenever possible. The restoration even won awards. It’s a beautiful example of preserving heritage.
Think of the countless prayers whispered within these walls. Imagine the generations who have sought solace and community within the Good Shepherd Church. It continues to be a peaceful place for everyone to find peace and reflection. The Good Shepherd Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of hope and faith a sanctuary in the heart of Melbourne.
