Picture the soaring stained-glass windows of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. This magnificent structure in Garland Texas is a testament to faith and community. It wasn’t always this grand. Good Shepherd’s humble beginnings date back to 1923. Only three Catholic families resided in Garland then. They had to travel to Rowlett or Wylie for Mass.
Garland’s rapid growth changed that. By 1943 Father John Lavin secured a theater for regular services. A small house and lot became a chapel in 1944. The small congregation expanded to approximately 50 people. The community’s commitment to their faith led to paying off the church property debt within just a few years.
By 1953 200 Catholic families planned a larger church school and auditorium. Father Charles W Smid arrived as pastor in 1954. That same year the parochial school opened with six grades. The original church building was completed. Sixty years later the congregation celebrated the dedication of a stunning new church.
The new Good Shepherd Catholic Church is a striking building. It boasts an open design of wood stone and marble. The three hour dedication ceremony in 2025 was led by Bishop Greg Kelly and Pastor Jose Luis Esparza. The impressive structure seats 1340 people three times the capacity of its predecessor. It is a beautiful reflection of the church’s enduring legacy in Garland. The numerous stained-glass windows depict Christ as the Good Shepherd a fitting symbol for this thriving community. Good Shepherd stands as a reminder that faith can move mountains even in the heart of Texas. This beautiful building serves as a symbol of the deep rooted faith and strong community bonds of Garland.
