Ruins whisper tales. Before us stands a reconstruction of the Gonsenheimer Tor. This is not the original. The original Gonsenheimer Tor was part of Mainz’s Rheingauwall a fortification built after the Franco-Prussian War. It was one of the few entrances through the new wall. The Gonsenheimer Tor secured the western exit towards Gonsenheim. The road Am Fort Gonsenheim passed through it.

Built in 1872 the Gonsenheimer Tor was strategically located at the highest point of the Rheingauwall. It had separate passages for vehicles and pedestrians. Barrel-vaulted casemates flanked the gate. Large arched windows lit these from the city side. On the field side double-doored openings were present. The lower ones were barely above the moat floor.

A bridge of steel double-T girders spanned the moat. This could be quickly dismantled in wartime. Inside an additional drawbridge provided extra security. Thick layers of earth protected the gate from artillery fire. The Gonsenheimer Tor was 35 meters wide. Its sandstone cladding featured high-quality craftsmanship. There was no decorative facade. The Gonsenheimer Tor was not merely a gate. It was a symbol of Mainz’s defensive strength.

Sadly improved artillery technology rendered the Gonsenheimer Tor obsolete. The upper part was demolished around 1912. Lower sections were filled in and levelled. The Gonsenheimer Tor seemed lost to history. Then during construction of a new SWR building in 2003 remnants reappeared. The SWR took on the responsibility of its reconstruction. They carefully rebuilt the gate a few meters from its original location.

Today the Gonsenheimer Tor stands as a testament to Mainz’s rich history. It is a reminder of a time when walls and gates defined the city’s limits. It is a poignant reminder of the transient nature of power. The Gonsenheimer Tor may be a reconstruction. But it speaks volumes about Mainz’s past. It reminds us of the enduring spirit of the city.
