The Gong Bende is far larger than the typical bende. A bende is a smaller golden gong found throughout Indonesia. Traditionally benden signaled important events. Announcements of royal visits or village gatherings were often heralded with its resonant sound. Even ancient reliefs from the 15th century at Candi Sukuh depict benden.
Our Gong Bende in Ancol was inaugurated on December 31 1999. Former Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso presided over the ceremony. Its inaugural peal rang out at midnight ushering in the year 2000. The inscription around the base speaks of hope and new beginnings. It hints at a long journey and the challenges overcome. However these words are somewhat obscured by the surrounding signs. They interrupt the view and unfortunately detract from the monument.
Many Jakartans call it Gong Ancol. It’s become a popular spot for selfies. Visitors flock to capture their memories against this impressive backdrop. The location however is not ideal. It sits near a busy intersection. This sometimes causes traffic jams. Still the Gong Bende remains a cherished landmark. A symbol of peace and a testament to Jakarta’s rich history.
