Around 3000 years ago the first settlers arrived in the area of Gomlitz. They built a burial ground. Gomlitz itself was first mentioned in 1378. The name might come from the Sorbian word komon meaning horse or gomola meaning hill. Gomlitz is located eleven kilometers north of Dresden’s city center. It sits outside the Elbe valley five kilometers from its edge. Neighboring areas include Weixdorf Marsdorf and Lausa. Gomlitz is built along the Radeburger Landstrasse and Alte Moritzburger Strasse. Only the southeastern part is built up. This area rests on dry nutrient-poor soil. The southern border is the Schelsbach valley. This stream flows into the Lausenbach in Lausa. Gomlitz’s center is around 205 meters above sea level. It’s close to the Dresden airport. This proximity causes significant noise pollution. A two kilometer section of the A4 highway runs through Gomlitz. Gomlitz was once part of the Dresden district. In 1450 a manor house was mentioned. Another followed in 1547. Around 1600 the village belonged to the von Zschieren family. After 1696 Gomlitz became part of the Hermsdorf estate. The village was incorporated into Weixdorf in 1914. It became a part of Dresden in 1999. Several old buildings have survived. One at Alte Moritzburger Strasse 7 dates from 1763. It is a typical Gassendorf. Many stone and half-timbered houses remain. The old village core is still partially preserved today. This makes Gomlitz a treasure. A historical glimpse into Dresden’s past. A quiet reminder of Saxony’s rich history. Visit Gomlitz and explore this peaceful corner of Dresden. Discover its long past and enduring charm.
