Strange how nature can sculpt such wonders isn’t it? We are standing before the Gomba-szikla near Piliscsaba. This is no ordinary rock. It is a testament to time and the elements.

Gomba-szikla translates to Mushroom Rock. Look closely and you will see why. From up here the formation indeed resembles a giant mushroom. But venture closer. Walk around its base. You will discover something fascinating.

The Gomba-szikla is a master of disguise. Each side presents a different face. From one angle it looks like a two-pronged fork. Another reveals what seems to be the head of a petrified alien. The surrounding stones are also climbable.

The hike to the Gomba-szikla is not strenuous. It is a perfect outing for those seeking natural beauty without a demanding trek. The path is just over 3 kilometers. Without stops you could complete it in an hour. However I recommend setting aside about three hours. This allows you to fully appreciate the scenery.

The trail begins at the intersection of Kálvária and Gomba streets in Piliscsaba. From there it is a steady but manageable climb. The route winds through a forest.

As you ascend to Kálvária-domb you will find a small chapel built in 1837. Take a moment to rest on the bench. Enjoy the panoramic view of Piliscsaba below.

Leaving the chapel behind the path leads into a pine forest. Depending on the weather you will find yourself in a fairy tale. On sunny days it feels like a charming magical forest. When it is cloudy it resembles a fantasy or horror landscape.

Just past the rest area you will find the Gomba-szikla. There are other large stones nearby that are also climbable. For a better view there is a lookout point.

Beyond the Gomba-szikla the trail continues through the forest. Along the way keep an eye out for interesting tree formations. There is one that looks like it is standing on three legs. You can even crawl inside it.

The next stop on our journey is the Ördögoltár-szikla or Devil’s Altar Rock. This massive white rock is hard to miss. Its bizarre name comes from the belief that it was once used for religious ceremonies. Sadly it has suffered some damage. Climbers have left rusty bolts in its surface. There is also some Soviet-era graffiti spray-painted on it.

From the Devil’s Altar Rock it is a short walk back to Piliscsaba. The path descends leading us back to our starting point.

The Gomba-szikla stands as a reminder of the power and artistry of nature. Its ever-changing appearance and tranquil setting make it a memorable destination. So take a moment to appreciate this geological wonder.
