Fourteen stone figures stand silently on Golgota Square. They watch over a space once lost and now reborn. Golgota Square holds a Calvary, a poignant reminder of faith and resilience. The original Calvary was built before the turn of the 20th century. It was a place of peace and reflection in the bustling heart of Józsefváros. But tragedy struck in 1971. The Calvary was demolished, and its chapel destroyed. For decades, only memories remained. Then, in 2019, a spark of hope ignited. The Józsefváros Local Council, with state funding, initiated a restoration project. The goal was to bring back the lost Calvary to Golgota Square. Piece by piece, the stations were painstakingly recreated. Fourteen stone columns were erected. Within each, bronze reliefs depict the stations of the cross. The project culminated in 2021. The restored Calvary stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It serves as a symbol of hope, reminding us that even what is lost can be found again.
