Ever wondered what fuels the vibrant heart of Goldsmiths University? It’s the Goldsmiths Students’ Union a hub of student life. This isn’t just any student union. It’s a registered charity independent of the university. The GSU champions students’ rights academically socially and in their welfare. It’s also the driving force behind countless social events workshops and improvements to campus facilities.

Picture this bustling space. Here students gather. They elect representatives. Four full-time officers are paid. Fourteen part-time officers also serve. Elections happen each spring. The National Union of Students independently verifies these elections. This ensures fairness and transparency.

The GSU isn’t just about elections. It releases an Annual Impact Report. This document showcases the union’s achievements. It’s presented to university management. Students also receive copies. It’s a testament to their hard work.

The GSU hasn’t been without controversy. In 2014 it faced criticism for rejecting a motion. The motion commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day and the Armenian Genocide. An officer described the initial motion as Eurocentric and pro-British-colonialist. It was seen as too narrowly focused on European history. A redrafted version was promised. The GSU clarified that redrafting motions is normal. This isn’t necessarily an indication of opposition.

Then in 2015 another controversy arose. The Welfare and Diversity Officer Bahar Mustafa excluded white and male students from an event. The event was meant for black minority and ethnic women. Mustafa was accused of racism and sexism. She denied these accusations. She argued that these terms describe structures of privilege. A vote of no confidence failed. It didn’t get enough signatures from the student body.

More recently in 2022 more controversy emerged. A lecturer criticized the NUS decolonize education campaign. The GSU president responded with a harsh tweet. This led to further criticism and a call for the president’s resignation. The GSU however strongly supported their president.

The Goldsmiths Students’ Union. A dynamic and sometimes controversial force. It’s a vital part of Goldsmiths University. It reflects the passions and concerns of its student body. It continues to shape the university experience. It’s more than a building. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a testament to student power and activism.
