Gazing across the Bosphorus, can you imagine a place where the sky’s blue is mirrored in the waters below? This is Göksu Mahallesi, named for the Göksu Stream that flows through its heart. Göksu Mahallesi sits nestled on Istanbul’s Anatolian side, within the Beykoz district. Northward lies Anadoluhisarı, while the Bosphorus stretches to the west. To the east rises Göztepe, and southward lies Yenimahalle. Göksu Mahallesi is cradled between two streams, the Göksu and the Küçüksu.

Göksu Mahallesi has drawn visitors for centuries. Evliya Çelebi, the famous Ottoman traveler, described Göksu in his Seyahatname. He wrote of the “Göksu Fortress,” a place of leisure, and the unique white lime extracted from the mountains. He also noted the distinctive red clay, used for crafting pottery. This area, once known as Aretas during Byzantine times, became a hub of activity under Ottoman rule. Sultan Murat IV, captivated by Göksu Mahallesi’s beauty, enhanced its surroundings. He planted cypress trees, lending the area the name “Gümüş Servi,” or Silver Cypress.

Göksu’s transformation into a social hub began with a wooden mansion built by Sultan Mahmut I in the 18th century. This mansion marked a turning point for the area, attracting both commoners and elites. Coffeehouses and entertainment venues sprang up, solidifying Göksu’s reputation as a prime destination. The shores bustled with boat trips and moonlit festivities. The area became especially lively on Fridays when the Sultan and other members of the Ottoman dynasty would visit.

The Göksu Stream itself was navigable by boat for about a kilometer inland. During the late 18th century, boat trips were a popular pastime. These trips, accompanied by music and entertainment, were often described in various sources. People from all walks of life, including the Levantine communities of Beyoğlu and Galata, flocked to Göksu Mahallesi. Many experienced their first swims in the Göksu and Küçüksu Streams. The valley even hosted an annual fair in September, organized by the local Greek community.

Göksu Mahallesi’s significance extended beyond leisure and entertainment. The Elmalı Dam on the Göksu Stream provided water to Beykoz, Üsküdar, and Kadıköy. The stream’s mud, rich in minerals, proved ideal for pottery. Göksu’s distinctive water jugs, known for their durability and cooling properties, became highly sought after. The fertile lands surrounding Göksu supported the cultivation of crops like corn, peaches, and eggplants. Sadly, a devastating flood in 1909 altered Göksu’s landscape. The flood damaged the area, leading to a decline in its popularity. Mansions crumbled, boats disappeared, wooden bridges were replaced by concrete, and trees were felled. Today, Göksu Mahallesi is gradually regaining its prominence. Its rich history and picturesque location continue to draw visitors seeking a glimpse into Istanbul’s vibrant past.
