“Student in Leipzig 1765-68” the inscription on the back reads. This is the Goethedenkmal in Leipzig. Before you stands a bronze statue of a young Goethe. He is depicted during his Leipzig student days.

The Goethedenkmal is more than just a pretty face. It’s a testament to Leipzig’s rich history. It shows how the city embraced its literary heritage. The monument wasn’t erected quickly. The idea to honor Goethe didn’t arise until the 1890s. This was relatively late compared to other cities associated with the famous poet. City archivist Gustav Wustmann played a key role. He pushed for the creation of this monument.

Around 1895 Carl Seffner presented a sketch. It was initially planned as a marble statue. A committee was formed to raise funds. They collected donations for the monument. Seffner submitted a detailed design for a bronze statue in 1897.

The Naschmarkt was chosen as the location in 1901. A trial setup of the model was held on May 23rd of the same year. A 28-year-old Leipzig gymnastics teacher posed for the casting. Seffner used images from later periods of Goethe’s life for facial features. He did this because there were no pictures from Goethe’s Leipzig years. Berlin architect Max Bischoff designed the pedestal. Noack & Bruckner cast the bronze statue in 1902.

The unveiling ceremony took place on June 28 1903. The total cost was 44000 Marks. The city contributed 10000 Marks each from the legacies of Franz Dominic Grassi and Ferdinand Rhode.

Notice the details. The 265-meter bronze statue stands on a 25-meter high red granite pedestal. Goethe’s pose shows a student strolling outdoors. The book in his right hand suggests intellectual pursuits. Many interpret this as Goethe returning from a walk through the Rosental. He is heading towards Auerbachs Hof. That’s where his friend Behrisch lived.

The pedestal’s front bears the inscription “Johann Wolfgang Goethe”. The sides feature relief portraits. The west side shows Friederike Oeser. She was the daughter of Goethe’s drawing teacher Adam Friedrich Oeser. Goethe had a friendly relationship with her. The east side shows Anna Katharina Schönkopf. She was the daughter of the innkeeper. Goethe had his lunch there during his studies. She was also his first great love. These portraits give the monument local significance. Their laurel wreaths connect it to the decorative system of the stock exchange building behind it.

The Goethedenkmal remains a cherished landmark. It’s a popular gathering spot in the heart of Leipzig. It’s a powerful symbol of Leipzig’s literary legacy. It embodies the spirit of the young Goethe. It’s a must-see for any visitor.
