Goerdeler-Denkmal

Descending into the heart of Leipzig, we find the Goerdeler-Denkmal. This poignant memorial isn’t just a statue. It’s a journey into the life of Carl Friedrich Goerdeler. He was Leipzig’s Oberbürgermeister from 1930 to 1937. The Goerdeler-Denkmal stands as a stark reminder of his courage and sacrifice. It was erected in 1999, born from the artistic vision of Jenny Holzer and Michael Glier. The memorial features a five-meter deep bell shaft. This shaft measures 2.75 meters in diameter and houses a bronze bell. This bell rings five times a day, at 5:55 a.m., 11:55 a.m., 5:55 p.m., and 11:55 p.m. On significant days, like the anniversary of Goerdeler’s execution on February 2nd, the bell tolls every hour. It also rings on other important dates, including International Day Against the Death Penalty on November 30th, and Goerdeler’s birthday on July 31st. The Goerdeler-Denkmal is more than just a bell shaft. It’s an arena of remembrance. Three circular stone steps surround the bell shaft. These steps are inscribed with quotes from Goerdeler’s speeches, texts, and letters. They are arranged chronologically, inviting us to trace the evolution of his thoughts. The Goerdeler-Denkmal is a place of quiet reflection. The memorial was designed to encourage contemplation. The steps, made of Kirchheimer Muschelkalk and Nero Assolto granite, offer a place to sit and ponder Goerdeler’s words. The entire structure is encircled by a three-meter wide ring of low-growing plants. These plants add to the memorial’s serene atmosphere. Goerdeler resigned from his position as Oberbürgermeister in protest against Nazi policies. He was later executed in 1945 for his involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944. The Goerdeler-Denkmal serves not just as a tribute to Goerdeler. It serves as a testament to the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs, even in the face of great danger.
