Before the club was founded young Godesbergers built their own canoes. They enjoyed paddling together. Boat construction and repair were important skills. Boats were expensive and hard to find. In June 1932 thirty-three like-minded people founded the GKC. Their main goal was to create a boat hall together.
After several moves the club found its current home in 1954. Members built the boat house almost entirely through volunteer work. This took four years. The Godesberger Kanu Club grew into a thriving center for watersports.
The Godesberger Kanu Club supports various forms of canoe sport. These include canoe slalom, canoe hiking, wildwater paddling, and canoe marathon. The Rhine River is the main training ground. The club also offers introductory courses. These courses teach beginners the basics. Advanced paddlers can refine their skills. They can also learn Eskimo roll and rescue techniques. Children can start paddling with special kid’s training. The club provides diverse activities for all ages.
Beyond sports the Godesberger Kanu Club offers a vibrant social life. The boathouse is a meeting point. People gather for sports and social activities. The club also engages in various other activities. These include skiing, boules, and hiking.
Roswitha Esser is one of the club’s most famous athletes. She won a gold medal in the 1964 Olympic Games in the kayak race. Other club members have also won German championship titles. The Godesberger Kanu Club continues to foster talent.
The Godesberger Kanu Club is a DKV-Kanu station. It welcomes guest paddlers. Guests must register in advance.
The club is still active today. They train all year round. The focus is on canoe slalom on the Rhine. They also organize trips on nearby rivers. These rivers include Sieg, Ahr, Kellenbach and Nister. Advanced paddlers tackle more challenging sections.
