Prayers ascend like incense here at GMI Imanuel. GMI Imanuel is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and community. Let’s delve into the story of GMI Imanuel. It is a story that began with a small group and blossomed into a widespread network of service.
In 1968 a few Methodist faithful yearned to establish a Methodist outpost in Angke West Jakarta. Their prayers were answered. Services began in a humble garage on Jl. Samarasa I No. 20 Angke. Around 20 people gathered there.
GMI Imanuel grew steadily. By June 20 1976 their first church building was dedicated on Jl. Latumeten Gg. Rahayu I No. 7. It could hold about 100 people. The church was named GMI Jemaat Imanuel.
The congregation expanded. The need for space grew urgent. Both worship areas and school rooms were stretched. Parking became a problem. In 1992 a significant step was taken. A plot of land was purchased. It measured approximately 4000 square meters on Jl. Terusan Bandengan Utara No. 91 AY. This is where the church and school stand today.
Construction took time but on May 8 2004 the new GMI Imanuel building was finally dedicated. It stands as a beacon of faith in Jakarta.
GMI Imanuel’s commitment to service mirrors the spirit of John Wesley. He emphasized education and evangelism. The church established Perguruan Kristen Methodist Indonesia PKMI Imanuel. It began with kindergarten in 1977. Elementary school followed in 1978. Junior high started in 1982 and senior high in 1990.
