Whispers of a tiny island a jewel in the Thames. This is Glover’s Island. Originally known as Petersham Ait this small island sits between Richmond Lock and Teddington Lock. It’s a tranquil haven a green escape in the heart of bustling London.

Joseph Glover a Richmond waterman purchased Glover’s Island in 1872 for a mere 70 pounds. A bargain considering its later valuation. He later tried to sell it for a whopping 5000 pounds. The Richmond Corporation balked at the price. Glover then threatened to sell it to Pears soap for a giant advertisement. A scandal ensued. This bold move aimed to pressure the corporation into buying the island.

The corporation wanted the island. They felt the price was excessive. A debate raged in the local press. The view from Richmond Hill was a prized possession. The purchase should be funded jointly by the public and the corporation many suggested. The auction in 1898 yielded only 200 pounds. Glover refused to sell. An unnamed resident offered 1000 pounds. Glover remained steadfast. He refused the offer.

Finally in 1900 Max Waechter bought Glover’s Island. He gifted it to the council. The price remained undisclosed. A covenant ensured its preservation. Glover’s Island would never be developed.

During the Blitz in September 1940 London Zoo’s penguins found temporary refuge on Glover’s Island. Their Penguin Pool needed repairs. The island provided a safe haven. The penguins a surprising addition to the island’s history.

Today Glover’s Island remains a symbol of preservation. A testament to the power of community and a beautiful green space. It’s a tiny island with a big story.
