Beneath the sprawling green expanse of Gloucester Park lies a fiery secret. This seemingly tranquil park in Onehunga, Auckland, rests within the heart of a slumbering volcano, Te Hopua a Rangi. Gloucester Park wasn’t always a recreational haven. Originally, it was a 300-meter wide maar crater. This crater, known first as Onehunga Basin, then Geddes Basin, even served as a boat harbour. Imagine small boats bobbing in the waters within this volcanic crater. In the 1930s, a controversial decision was made. The crater was filled, levelled, and transformed into the park we see today. This reclamation project sparked protests. Many lamented the loss of a unique geological formation. However, the transformation proceeded, and the park received its current name, Gloucester Park, in 1935. This was to honor the Duke of Gloucester’s visit to New Zealand. Gloucester Park’s story took another turn in 1935. The Governor-General opened a speedway within the park, adding the roar of engines to its history. From 1941 to 1946, the army occupied Te Hopua a Rangi. They built barracks and even commandeered the Manukau Yacht and Motor Boat Club clubhouse. The speedway fell silent during this time but roared back to life after the war’s end. Today, the Southwestern Motorway cuts right through Gloucester Park, a modern scar across this ancient landscape. This division of the park, coupled with its transformation from crater lake to recreational area, makes it hard to imagine its volcanic origins. However, the tuff ring, though modified, is still discernible. It stands as a testament to the park’s fiery past. Gloucester Park is more than just a green space. It’s a place where nature’s power, human ingenuity, and historical events have converged. They have created a unique landscape rich with hidden stories.
