“The Glory of God” is more than just a name. It is the very essence of Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church. This church stands as a beacon of faith in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood. It is a testament to the enduring power of community and the unwavering spirit of its members.

Gloria Dei’s story began in 1939. A group of Lutherans gathered in a humble bungalow. They met at the corner of Parkside Avenue and 52nd Street. In January 1940 they resolved to form a congregation. Reverend Hugo Bloedel was called as their pastor. They named their church Parkside Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Just a few weeks later the congregation officially organized. February 4 1940 marks the founding of Gloria Dei. Soon after, trustees bought six lots at the corner of South Major Avenue and 53rd Street. The cornerstone was laid in May 1941. Finally, the church building was dedicated in September 1941.

In August 1941 the congregation chose a new name. Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church. Gloria Dei is Latin for “The Glory of God.” This name reflects their devotion and purpose.

Seven pastors have guided Gloria Dei through its history. Reverend Elmer Sedory served the longest. He was at Gloria Dei from 1955 until his retirement in 1988. Since 2003 Reverend Steven J Anderson has served. He celebrated his 20th anniversary in November 2023.

In the 1950s Gloria Dei considered starting a school. This vision became a reality. Gloria Dei Lutheran School was built. The church building was renovated. The renovated church and new school were dedicated in September 1960. For many years the school served the community. It operated from 1960 until June 2019.

In November 2022 Gloria Dei Lutheran Church joined with Hope Lutheran Church. They formed a Dual Parish arrangement. Pastor Steven Anderson became pastor of Hope Lutheran Church. He continued to serve at Gloria Dei. Gloria Dei moved its Divine Service to 9 am.

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church remains an oasis. It proclaims the Word of God in Garfield Ridge. Here all are welcome. Gloria Dei stands as a reminder of faith hope and community. It embodies “The Glory of God” in all that it does. The story is a testament to its rich history and bright future.
