Gloria Dei Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship it’s a living testament to faith and community. It all began on November 12 1939. A small group of Lutherans held services in a bungalow. This wasn’t a grand cathedral but a humble house of prayer. Their devotion laid the foundation for what would become Gloria Dei.

On January 24 1940 they formally organized. The Rev Hugo Bloedel became their first pastor. The congregation was initially called Parkside Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church. This name reflected their location then at the corner of Parkside Avenue and 52nd Street. A significant step forward came on March 3 1940. The trustees purchased land on the northeast corner of South Major Avenue and 53rd Street. This marked a transition from a temporary space to a permanent home.

The cornerstone was laid on May 18 1941. The church building was dedicated just four months later on September 28 1941. This dedication marked a pivotal moment for the burgeoning congregation. The name changed officially to Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church on August 3 1941. Gloria Dei meaning The Glory of God in Latin. It reflected the congregation’s deep faith.

Seven pastors have served Gloria Dei. The longest tenure was Rev Elmer Sedory from 1955 to 1988. Rev Steven J Anderson the current pastor has served since 2003. He recently celebrated his 20th anniversary in November 2023. His long service speaks to the enduring spirit of Gloria Dei.

The church expanded its mission in the 1950s. They established Gloria Dei Lutheran School. This addition significantly enlarged the church building. The renovated church and new school opened in September 1960. The school provided Christian education for the community. It operated until June 2019. Many dedicated teachers and four principals contributed to its success.

In a modern twist on tradition Gloria Dei formed a dual parish arrangement in 2022. They partnered with Hope Lutheran Church of Countryside. Pastor Anderson now serves both congregations. This demonstrates the adaptive spirit of Gloria Dei. It continues to evolve to serve the community.
