Picture this: a modest bungalow on the corner of Parkside Avenue and 52nd Street. This wasn’t always the home of the majestic Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1939 a group of devout Lutherans began holding services there. It was a humble beginning for what would become a cornerstone of the Garfield Ridge community.

Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its history is rich and spans generations. This isn’t just a church it’s a living, breathing part of Chicago’s story. Its very name Gloria Dei meaning The Glory of God speaks to its deep spiritual roots.

The journey of Gloria Dei began on November 12 1939. Services were initially held in that small bungalow. Then on February 4 1940 the congregation officially formed with Reverend Hugo Bloedel as its first pastor. Initially known as Parkside Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church it later adopted its current name in 1941. The cornerstone of the current building was laid that same year. September 28 1941 saw the dedication of the beautiful church structure we see today.

Seven pastors have served Gloria Dei since its founding. Reverend Elmer Sedory served the longest from 1955 to 1988. Reverend Steven J Anderson the current pastor has served since 2003. He celebrated his 20th anniversary in November 2023. This speaks volumes about the enduring connection between the church and its community.

Gloria Dei’s influence extended beyond Sunday services. In the 1950s a Lutheran school was established. A significant renovation of the church and the construction of the school were completed in 1960. This school served the community until 2019 providing religious and secular education to countless children. The school’s impact on the community is evident in the lives of the many students who passed through its doors.

In a testament to its enduring commitment to community Gloria Dei joined with Hope Lutheran Church in 2022. This dual parish arrangement reflects the church’s continued dedication to service and spiritual growth. They now hold their services at 9am and Hope Lutheran at 10:45am.

As we stand here today before Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church I hope you sense its enduring spirit.
