What do a tailor shop, a bowling alley, and Glenview Community Church have in common? You might be surprised to learn that during World War II, the Glenview Community Church congregation held services in all of these unusual locations! Founded in 1897 as the Congregational Church of Glenview, this house of worship experienced a surge in membership during the war years. Despite the need for a larger space, wartime shortages made construction materials scarce. Undeterred, the congregation adapted, holding services wherever they could. They even met in a field house, demonstrating their unwavering faith. By 1946, with materials more available, they finally constructed the church building that stands here today at the corner of Glenview Road and Elm Street. Over the years, Glenview Community Church continued to grow and evolve, adding a gymnasium, a church school, an office wing, and expanding the sanctuary to its current size. This expansion reflects the church’s enduring commitment to serving its community. Today, Glenview Community Church stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of its congregation. Their willingness to adapt during challenging times ensured that their spiritual home continued to thrive.
