Imagine a time before the Auckland Harbour Bridge sparked Glenfield’s suburban boom. That’s where our story of Glenfield Primary School begins. Glenfield Primary School has stood as a cornerstone of this community since 1959. But the story stretches back further.
Before 1912, this area wasn’t even called Glenfield. It was Mayfield. The name came from blossoming white mānuka bushes. Residents thought they looked like springtime in England.
Mayfield School opened in 1891. It quickly became a vital social hub. But with a growing population after the Harbour Bridge opened in 1959 a new school was needed.
So Glenfield Primary School was built on Chivalry Road. The old Mayfield School stayed open for standards three and four. That lasted until its closure in 1963. Mr Riley addressed the children at the closing ceremony for the old Glenfield Mayfield School in 1963.
Glenfield Primary School has adapted to Glenfield’s changing face over the years. The school’s story is interwoven with the suburb’s transformation. From rural community to bustling suburb Glenfield Primary School has been a constant.
Today Glenfield Primary School continues to serve its community. It provides education for children from years 1 to 6. The school roll was 254 students as of February 2024.
Consider the teachers who have dedicated their lives here. Think of the students who have passed through its doors. Each has added a chapter to Glenfield Primary School’s rich history. The school stands as a testament to the power of community and the importance of education.
