Glen Waverley. A place nicknamed the “Centre of the Universe”. Glen Waverley isn’t just a Melbourne suburb. It’s a dynamic blend of cultures, commerce, and history, located just 19 km southeast of Melbourne’s bustling heart. Glen Waverley’s story begins in the mid-19th century as humble farmland and orchards. The first post office, initially called Black Flat, opened in 1885. It was later renamed Glen Waverley in 1921, borrowing its name from a Sir Walter Scott novel. Glen Waverley experienced a boom in the mid-20th century. Developers built homes on spacious 800m² blocks, setting a high standard for suburban living. One such development was the Legend Park Estate, opened in 1971. Glen Waverley also holds a special place in Australian fast-food history. Victoria’s first McDonald’s opened here in 1973, at the corner of High Street and Springvale Road. It stood as the nation’s oldest McDonald’s until its demolition and subsequent rebuild in 2016. Today, Glen Waverley is a major commercial hub north of the Monash Freeway. Kingsway, its main street, pulsates with restaurants and entertainment venues. It also houses the Century City Walk, a multiplex mall with cinemas, bowling, and dining options. Glen Waverley also boasts The Glen Shopping Centre, the eleventh largest in Victoria. Glen Waverley isn’t just a retail paradise. It is the Australian headquarters for international giants like Toshiba, Ansell, and NEC. Glen Waverley has become known as the “Centre of the Universe” by local Chinese-Australians, due to its excellent amenities, schools, and transport links. This popularity is reflected in its property values, with a high number of million-dollar home sales recorded in 2013. The 2016 census paints a picture of Glen Waverley’s diverse population. While 30.9% of residents were Australian-born, significant portions hailed from China (15.5%), India (9.4%), and Sri Lanka (9.3%). Mandarin and Cantonese were widely spoken alongside English. Glen Waverley is also well-served by public transport. It’s the terminus of the Glen Waverley railway line and a future interchange for the Suburban Rail Loop. Numerous bus routes connect the suburb to surrounding areas. Glen Waverley also offers excellent educational opportunities. It is home to the highly regarded Glen Waverley Secondary College and the prestigious Wesley College. From its humble beginnings as Black Flat to its current status as a thriving multicultural hub, Glen Waverley has transformed remarkably. It’s a place where history meets modernity, where commerce thrives, and where community flourishes.
