In the early 1970s, a small group of Simalungun Christians started holding services. They yearned for a place to worship together, a spiritual home in the sprawling city. Their dedication bore fruit in 1974, marking the first regular service at the GKPS Jemaat Ancol in Jakarta. The congregation grew, drawing Simalungun Christians from across the city. GKPS Jemaat Ancol quickly became more than just a place of worship. It became a community center, a place to connect with fellow Simalungun Christians, share stories, and celebrate their heritage. Interestingly, GKPS Jemaat Ancol isn’t just a local church. It’s part of a larger network of GKPS churches, forming the GKPS Distrik VII. This district encompasses a vast area. It covers not only Jakarta but also Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, Lampung, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. Imagine the diverse tapestry of cultures and communities united under one faith! The church faced a hurdle in 2019. The leadership of GKPS Jemaat Ancol sought a recommendation for a permit. The Ministry of Religion and the Regional Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB) in North Jakarta conducted a verification process. The requirements included updating the registration of religious institutions, providing a decree for church leaders/pastors, and ensuring the church accommodated a maximum of 90 congregants and 60 local residents. Despite these challenges, the GKPS Jemaat Ancol community persevered. Their collective efforts and determination ultimately led to the successful acquisition of the permit. This victory underscored their resilience. It emphasized the importance of their church as a spiritual anchor in the heart of Jakarta. GKPS Jemaat Ancol continues to thrive today, a testament to the enduring faith of the Simalungun Christian community in Jakarta.
