“Did you know that the GKPO Immanuel stands as one of Jakarta’s oldest churches?”

Let’s explore the captivating story of GKPO Immanuel. It holds a special place in Indonesia’s religious history. This Protestant church is located on the corner of Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur and Jalan Pejambon.

Imagine yourself transported back to the 19th century. This area was once the Weltevreden district. It later transformed into Gambir. The GKPO Immanuel is unique. It still conducts some services in Dutch. It also holds services in Indonesian and English.

The idea for the church’s construction came from Dutch Reformists and Lutherans in Batavia now Jakarta. J.H. Horst designed the church. Construction started in 1834. The first stone was laid on August 24, 1835. The church was completed exactly four years later.

The GKPO Immanuel was christened Willemskerk. This was to honor King William I of the Netherlands. It became one of the first civic buildings in Koningsplein. This square is now known as Merdeka Square.

Inside the GKPO Immanuel, an impressive Bätz organ was installed in 1843. It was lovingly restored in 1985. The church also safeguards a Dutch State Bible. It was printed in 1748 by Nicolaas Goetzee of Gorinchem.

The GKPO Immanuel is built in Indies Empire style. It features an all-brick structure. Stone columns and a pedimented portico add to its grandeur. The church sits on a 3-meter foundation. The doors are crafted from solid teak. Brass handles and keyholes embellish them.

A broad dark grey-brown dome tops the church. It is surmounted by a white cupola. The cupola mirrors the dome’s style and material. White pillars and tall cornices adorn the other sides. These support flat roof projections clad in stone.

Step inside and observe the circular layout. It has a diameter of 9.5 meters. Grey marble tiles cover the floor. Chairs are arranged in a circle. The state lectern used by the Governor of Batavia remains a focal point.

The GPIB Immanuel Jakarta, as it is also known, holds a special place in history. Once, it was exclusively for high-ranking Dutch officials. Common people were not permitted to worship there. The church’s location near the city center made it easily accessible for officials.

Today, the GKPO Immanuel stands as a cultural heritage site. It is protected by the government. Visitors can appreciate the blend of European and Indonesian cultures.

Consider the beautiful organ crafted in 1843. Jonathan Batz from Utrecht, Netherlands, created it. The organ was dismantled and cleaned in 1985. This ensured its continued use.

Notice the crystal lamps illuminating the space. Sunlight streams through windows beneath the dome. A communion plate from 1863 displays a lamb figure. A baptismal font from 1740 also graces the space.

Long, large frames adorn the walls. They list the names of past congregation leaders and their service years.

The GKPO Immanuel has even served as a filming location. Its unique architecture has appeared in Indonesian films.

The GKPO Immanuel is more than just a church. It is a living testament to Jakarta’s rich history. Its doors are open to all who seek solace. It is a place to reflect. It is a place to appreciate the blend of cultures that have shaped this vibrant city.
