GKI Kebon Bawang

In 1962, a small group of seafarers, hailing from Ambon, Timor, Toraja, and beyond, found themselves in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta. They yearned for a place of worship. The GKI Kebon Bawang’s story begins with these faithful individuals. Initially, they gathered for services near what is now a bypass road. Due to road construction, the government offered them a plot in Kramat Tunggak as a replacement. However, this location proved difficult to reach for those living in Warakas, Kampung Bahari, and near Priok train station. On February 5, 1962, three families formed an Emergency Committee. Through Jeremias Tanaem, they reached out to various congregations, including GKI Kwitang, seeking spiritual guidance and potential affiliation. GKI Kwitang agreed to minister to the group, establishing it as a branch. On May 20, 1962, the first official service was held at Tanaem’s home in Kampung Bahari, marking the inauguration of GKI Kwitang’s branch, soon to be GKI Kebon Bawang. The congregation, initially around 40 people, quickly outgrew the space. They began a period of transition, holding services at various locations including the GMIST Mahanaim church, Aula Deparla, the Advent Church on Jalan Anggrek, the Parede family home, the GMINDO church, and the GPKB church. This nomadic phase lasted for over a decade. On August 18, 1976, the GKI Kebon Bawang community purchased land on Jalan Swasembada Barat. Though unable to immediately build, this marked a pivotal moment. Finally, on June 10, 1984, they held their first service on the property. Between 1971 and 1980, the congregation grew to over 200 members. The stability of a permanent location allowed for further growth. Driven by a desire for independence, and inspired by Psalm 126:6 and Matthew 28:20, the congregation pursued autonomy. Their efforts were recognized at the 31st Jakarta Classis Meeting. On December 2, 1987, the GKI Kebon Bawang was officially established as an independent congregation. Nine years later, Reverend Anton Manahan Pardosi was ordained as their first pastor on March 21, 1996. GKI Kebon Bawang stands as a testament to the perseverance and faith of a small group of seafarers who sought a spiritual home in Jakarta.
