“Young Giraffes” a Bamberg classroom nickname. That’s the hook isn’t it? It all started with the 106th Finance Management Company. Soldiers from this unit adopted a third-grade class at Bamberg Elementary School. They call themselves the “Young Giraffes”. These soldiers visit the school every Wednesday and Friday. They read to the children and even bake cakes with them. The program aims to connect the soldiers with the community. It also mentors young minds. Deborah Heit the classroom teacher explains the nickname. The “Young Giraffes” learn to stick their necks out for others. The program started as a trial. It might expand to other classes if successful. The kids adore the soldiers’ visits. It is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn and grow. Spc Janada Morrison and Pvt Nabiha Isaq are two dedicated volunteers. They consistently try to send soldiers to interact with the children. The students understand that work duties sometimes prevent visits. Even on “Pajama Day” during “Spirit Week” the soldiers participated. The kids wear their favorite pajamas and learn about fire safety. They even make fire truck cakes. Morrison and Isaq helped the children bake. They chose cakes they made to take back to their unit. The children were thrilled. The story of the “Young Giraffes” highlights a unique connection. Soldiers and students find common ground in Bamberg.
