Hidden in plain sight, the Hauptsmoorwald whispers secrets of emperors and soldiers. The Hauptsmoorwald is Bamberg’s largest protected area. It sprawls over 3,000 hectares at Bamberg’s eastern edge. Imagine this vast forest once stretching to Bamberg’s train station. The Hauptsmoorwald isn’t just a collection of trees. It’s a time capsule preserving rare plants like sundew and endangered animals like the yellow-bellied toad and several bat species. The name “Hauptsmoorwald” comes from the water-logged layers in its valleys. These create a unique environment where alders thrive and ponds shimmer. This diversity of habitats contributes to the Hauptsmoorwald’s rich biodiversity. It serves as a vital fresh-air reservoir for the region. The dominant tree here is the pine. It flourishes in the sandy soil. This resilient wood was once prized for its quality. It was so strong and straight. It was even used for the wings of Dutch windmills and aircraft propellers. Walk the Rennweg, a historic path winding through the Hauptsmoorwald. This path bypassed the Regnitz Valley. It offered couriers a safe, hidden route through the forest, away from the main trade routes. Until 2014, part of the Hauptsmoorwald was under US jurisdiction. It served as a military training ground for the US Army. The German government has since declared 300 hectares a “National Natural Heritage” site. The forest also holds remnants of royalty. Find the Kunigundenruh-Stein, a stone cross commemorating Empress Kunigunde. A nearby lodge, also called Kunigundenruh, offers respite. The Hauptsmoorwald continues to evolve. It transitions from a military training ground to a protected natural heritage site. This underscores the ongoing interplay between human activity and the natural world.
