Beyond its breathtaking panoramic views lies a hidden gem, the Giraffe Viewpoint. What makes this viewpoint so special? The Giraffe Viewpoint offers a unique perspective, a chance to connect with nature’s gentle giants.

The San Francisco Zoo is home to reticulated giraffes. You can find these giraffes roaming in the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna. These giraffes are truly remarkable. As the tallest living land animal, they can grow to a height of 14-19 feet. These gentle giants have unique features. Consider their incredibly long necks and distinct spot patterns.

Giraffes’ necks can be as long as six feet. However they have only seven neck vertebrae, the same number humans have. The giraffe has an 18-inch-long tongue. It uses its tongue and prehensile upper lip to strip leaves off branches. Each giraffe has a unique spot pattern, much like a human fingerprint. The darker the spots, the older the giraffe.

Giraffes often form loosely organized groups. These groups can consist of 2-20 animals. Female giraffes are more social. They are usually found in groups, especially females with their young. Giraffes are generally quiet animals. However, they are capable of mooing, bleating, and bellowing.

Did you know that the Giraffe Viewpoint offers more than just a visual treat? At 3:45 p.m. each day, you can go inside the Giraffe Lodge. This offers an up-close look at some of the largest animals on Earth. Zookeepers share their knowledge of these gentle giants. They also feed them their daily dose of healthy snacks like bananas and romaine lettuce. Guests may even get a chance to serve the giraffes themselves.

When giraffes run, their hind feet are brought in front of the forelegs. This gallop covers enormous distances at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. A giraffe’s height requires a specialized large heart. This heart pumps blood to the brain. Unusually elastic blood vessels with a series of valves help offset the sudden build-up of blood. This is important when the head is raised, lowered, or swung quickly.

The reticulated giraffe has medium to reddish-brown splotches broken by cream-colored borders. The name “reticulated” refers to this net-like pattern. They inhabit level savanna regions. These giraffes prefer grassland with scattered trees and lightly wooded areas.

Standing here at the Giraffe Viewpoint, you are not just observing animals. You’re witnessing a conservation story unfold. The San Francisco Zoo is dedicated to giraffe conservation and wellness. They run various programs aimed at educating the public. These programs help preserve these magnificent animals. So, take a moment to appreciate these gentle giants. Their remarkable adaptations and the efforts to protect them make the Giraffe Viewpoint a truly special place.
