In 1808 Ginsheim-Gustavsburg was truly born. That’s the year its story truly begins. Before that Ginsheim and Gustavsburg existed separately. Napoleon controlled the area around Mainz. He had little interest in the land south of the Main River. This land became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. It was added to the Ginsheim area. The Ginsheim mayor confirmed this in 1808. Kostheim citizens sold their fields to Ginsheim farmers. This marked the start of Ginsheim-Gustavsburg’s unique identity.

Ginsheim-Gustavsburg is a city in Hesse Germany. It sits at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers. It’s directly opposite Mainz. Its population is around 17000. The two towns Ginsheim and Gustavsburg were part of Mainz from 1930 to 1945. They became independent again in 1945. Ginsheim-Gustavsburg received city rights in 2013.

Ginsheim has a rich history. It was first mentioned in a document in 785. This was in the Codex Eberhardi of the Fulda monastery. A 1225th anniversary celebration was held in 2011. For centuries Ginsheim was a farming fishing and milling center. Many mills stood along the Rhine. The last one operated until 1928. It was a protected landmark. It was unfortunately destroyed during World War II. A replica now sits on the Rhine near Ginsheim.

Gustavsburg’s name comes from King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. He built a fortress there in 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War. A Roman rider’s grave was found during construction. A copy of the stone is in the town hall. The Swedes abandoned Gustavsburg in 1635. It was eventually destroyed in 1673.

Both Ginsheim and Gustavsburg suffered during World War II. Ginsheim was heavily bombed in 1944. Twenty-two barns twenty stables and three houses burned down. The Protestant church was also destroyed. Gustavsburg was attacked repeatedly. The MAN factory was a main target. The war ended for Ginsheim-Gustavsburg in March 1945. American troops arrived.

After the war Ginsheim-Gustavsburg flourished. New housing was built. The IGS Mainspitze integrated comprehensive school was constructed in 1972. Today Ginsheim-Gustavsburg is a vibrant community with a rich history. It blends its agricultural past with its industrial present. It boasts a beautiful location at the confluence of two major rivers. Its unique story is a testament to its resilience and spirit. It’s a place where history and modernity coexist in harmony.
