Gilman Playground

Did you ever hear about a chimney mishap at Gilman Playground? This vibrant park, right here in Ballard, has seen its share of adventures since its opening in 1932. Gilman Playground wasn’t always its name. Originally, during planning, it was dubbed “West Woodland Playground”. The Gilman Park Community Club, instrumental in the park’s creation, successfully petitioned for the name change. This 3.9-acre oasis of fun owes its existence to the community’s persistence. They petitioned for the land back in 1927. Gilman Playground quickly became a beloved spot. It boasted a playfield, tennis courts, a wading pool, a children’s play area, and a distinctive shelter house. This Tudor Revival style shelter house is one of eight similar structures built in Seattle parks during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Designed for “organized recreation activities,” these buildings included large activity rooms, restrooms, and office space. The Gilman Playground shelter house earned historic landmark status from the City of Seattle. It stands as a testament to the park’s significance in Ballard’s history. Now, about that chimney. In 1953, young Jimmy Wright, in a moment of snowy day exuberance, climbed atop the shelter house and promptly slid down the chimney. He became momentarily stuck. Park superintendent Ben Evans had to rescue him. A soot-faced, tearful Jimmy vowed “Never again!”. The chimney still stands, though renovations ensure no repeat performances. Gilman Playground has a sporting legacy too. Two Ballard High School graduates honed their baseball skills here before making it to the Major Leagues: Earl Johnson with the Boston Red Sox and Chet Johnson with the Tacoma Tigers. In 1973, Gilman Playground made history again, hosting Seattle’s first Adventure Playground. Kids could build anything their imaginations could conjure with donated wood and tools. Today, Gilman Playground continues to thrive. T-ball games echo the triumphs of the Johnson brothers. The playground rings with laughter. The tennis courts see plenty of action.
