In the heart of Provence, under the watchful gaze of the Nerthe mountain range, lies Gignac-la-Nerthe. This charming town, just a stone’s throw from Marseille, whispers tales of Roman villas and Templar knights. Gignac-la-Nerthe wasn’t always “la-Nerthe.” Originally, it was simply Gignac. In 1919, during the aftermath of the First World War, the town adopted its current name to distinguish itself from other Gignacs scattered across France. This seemingly small detail reveals a community proud of its unique identity, nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Chaîne de la Nerthe. The 20th century brought significant changes to Gignac-la-Nerthe. The construction of the Rove Tunnel between 1911 and 1926 drew a wave of immigrants, predominantly Italian and Spanish, seeking work and a new life. Later, in the 1960s, the town embraced Pieds-Noirs returning from Algeria. Then, in the 1980s, the tide of peri-urbanization transformed Gignac-la-Nerthe into the largely residential community we see today. Despite this growth, Gignac-la-Nerthe retains its agricultural heritage. The Châteauneuf-Gignac plain, upon which the town sits, is a testament to this, remaining one of the few agricultural plains near Marseille. Gignac-la-Nerthe is a town of two halves. There’s Gignac proper in the east and Laure in the west. This duality adds to the town’s charm, reflecting its layered history. While Gignac-la-Nerthe may not boast grand monuments, its true treasures lie in the everyday stories of its people and the resilience of its spirit. The rhythmic pulse of life here is a blend of old and new, tradition and progress. Gignac-la-Nerthe invites you to experience its subtle magic. It is a place where the whispers of history intertwine with the warmth of a Provençal sun.
