Free entry? To Gertrude Contemporary? That’s right. Gertrude Contemporary in Preston South isn’t just any art gallery. It’s a vibrant hub of creativity. Gertrude Contemporary is a combined gallery and studio complex. It’s a place where artists create and exhibit, a model it pioneered in Australia back in 1985. Gertrude Contemporary moved to this location, a converted furniture warehouse, in 2017. Originally, it was located on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. But here in Preston South, the main exhibition program thrives. Alongside the exhibitions, Gertrude Contemporary houses studios for sixteen artists. They are part of a two-year residency program. In addition to this location, Gertrude Contemporary also has a satellite space, Gertrude Glasshouse, in Collingwood. This space showcases solo exhibitions from the artists in the studio program. So, as you explore Gertrude Contemporary, remember you’re walking through a space dedicated to supporting and showcasing contemporary art. Look around you. Feel the energy of the space. Imagine the artists at work in their studios. And appreciate the innovative spirit of Gertrude Contemporary.
