In a quiet corner of Paris’s 12th arrondissement, a simple plaque bears the name Germinal Matta. This plaque, located on Avenue de Saint-Mandé, tells a story of wartime resistance and sacrifice during the Nazi occupation of France. Germinal Matta Plaque commemorates a young man whose life was tragically cut short by the brutality of war. Germinal Matta, born in Paris in 1925, found himself caught in the turmoil of World War II. His mother, Alba Matta, worked as a typist for Albert Ouzoulias, a key figure in the French Resistance. Their apartment on Avenue de Saint-Mandé became a meeting place for the National Military Committee of the FTP (Francs-Tireurs et Partisans), a resistance group. Germinal joined the Maquis d’Achères-la-Forêt, a resistance group operating in the nearby forest. On July 4, 1944, just weeks before the liberation of Paris, he was arrested based on a betrayal. Imprisoned in Fontainebleau and subjected to torture, Germinal, along with 21 other resistants, was executed by the Germans on July 21, 1944. Their bodies were hastily buried in a mass grave in the Chanfroy plain. It wasn’t until December 7, 1944, that American troops, searching for sand in the former military training ground, discovered the grim remains. The Germinal Matta Plaque serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom during a dark period in history. It stands as a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of oppression.
