Sensing the shift in borders, you stand at Germany \u2014 Switzerland in Konstanz. This is where two nations meet. It is a place where histories intertwine. Let’s delve into the story of Konstanz. It is a city that cleverly navigated World War II.

Konstanz sits on Lake Constance. It shares a border with Kreuzlingen in Switzerland. The border runs right through the city center. This unique location played a vital role during the war. Air raids were common in Europe. Cities blacked out at night. This made it harder for attackers to find targets. Konstanz did something different. It kept its lights on.

The city got the idea from Kreuzlingen. Switzerland was neutral. Its lights stayed on. Konstanz hoped Allied pilots would mistake it for Switzerland. The trick worked. Pilots thought they were flying over Swiss territory. They didn’t drop bombs. Konstanz was spared much of the war’s destruction. It retained its original architecture. This helped it become a tourism hub later.

However, Konstanz wasn’t just a passive observer. It contributed to the German war effort. The city produced parts for the German arsenal. These parts were used against the Allies. Radar parts for submarines were manufactured here. Guns were also produced in Konstanz. Schwarzwald Flugzeugbau GmbH developed flying torpedoes here. Dornier, an aircraft manufacturer, moved part of its production to Konstanz. This happened after Friedrichshafen was bombed.

The city also participated in the deportation of Jewish citizens. In 1940, the last Jewish residents were sent to an internment camp. This camp was located in southwestern France. Those who survived until 1943 were sent to Auschwitz or Sobibór.

Konstanz has a long history. It dates back to the Stone Age. The Romans likely named it. It was the site of the Council of Constance in the 1400s. The council aimed to end the Great Schism. Konstanz officially became part of the German Empire in 1871.

Today, Konstanz is a vibrant city. It is the largest city on Lake Constance. It is the only German municipality on the lake’s southern shore. The old town is well-maintained. It borders Switzerland and Lake Rhine. On clear days, you can see the Alps.

Konstanz is a cultural and economic center. Its economy focuses on various sectors. These include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and technology. Machinery production and publishing are also important. The city is a popular tourist destination. It is also a convention center.

Notable buildings include the Konzilium. This was originally a merchants’ hall. The Renaissance Town Hall is also worth seeing. The Rosgarten Museum was once a butchers’ guild house. The Münster, a Romanesque-Gothic church, served as the cathedral until 1821.

The Insel Hotel is a former Dominican monastery. Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the builder of dirigibles, was born here. The city also has an art museum and a university.

From 2014 to 2018, Konstanz celebrated the 600th anniversary of the Council of Constance. The motto was “Europe is our guest”. This highlighted the city’s international character.

As you stand here at Germany \u2014 Switzerland, remember the city’s complex past. It is a city of innovation and cultural significance. It is a place where history and modernity meet.
