Gazing upon Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues, one can’t help but feel a sense of serenity amidst Jakarta’s urban hustle. Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues stands as a testament to faith and community. It serves as a spiritual haven for thousands, a beacon of hope in the heart of Pademangan, North Jakarta. This Catholic parish church, under the Archdiocese of Jakarta, has a rich history intertwined with the growth of the surrounding community. Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues is named after the Jesuit Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, reflecting its Jesuit pastoral care. In the 1950s, as PT Olympia developed the area around Tanjung Priok Port, new communities emerged. Among them were Catholic residents from Flores, settling near the northern Kalimati swamp. Recognizing their spiritual needs, the Cathedral Parish enlisted the help of Gereja Santo Petrus dan Paulus in Mangga Besar. Father R. Bakker, S.J. began his work in Pademangan in 1959, establishing a kindergarten and acquiring land for a school. His efforts, alongside the community, improved local infrastructure and facilitated the establishment of Santo Lukas Elementary School. The first mass was held in the school building on August 15, 1960, marking Kalimati’s official status as a station under the Mangga Besar Parish. The journey towards becoming an independent parish began in 1966 with Father Henricus van Opzeeland, S.J. He laid the groundwork, forming parish councils and community groups. Finally, on June 10, 1968, Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues Parish officially came into being. The current church building, consecrated in 2005 by Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja, S.J., is a unique architectural marvel. Designed by Y.B. Mangunwijaya, its joglo-like structure, a traditional Javanese architectural form, blends beautifully with its spiritual function. The inscription “Humilitas et Precare et Martyria” adorns the front, representing the values of humility, prayer, and sacrifice embodied by St. Alphonsus Rodriguez. Inside, the elliptical altar and stained-glass windows depicting the life of Jesus create a captivating atmosphere. Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues continues to thrive. Masses are held in Indonesian and Mandarin, catering to the diverse community. The church grounds also house a Grotto of Mary and a statue of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, further enhancing its spiritual significance. Across the complex, the Santo Lukas Foundation manages educational institutions, from kindergarten to high school, nurturing young minds and upholding the church’s commitment to education. Gereja St. Alfonsus Rodrigues is more than just a church; it is a testament to the enduring power of faith and a symbol of community in the heart of Jakarta.
