“Looking for peace?” I ask. Here before us stands Gereja St Agustinus. It is a Catholic church in East Jakarta. Gereja St Agustinus is under the Archdiocese of Jakarta. It also falls under the Military Ordinariate of Indonesia.

Let’s delve into its history. Gereja St Agustinus started as part of Gereja Santo Antonius Padua. That church was in Bidaracina. The Indonesian Air Force saw a need. They wanted to support the spiritual needs of Catholic personnel. In 1991, the Air Force Chief of Staff issued a decree. It called for houses of worship. The land for Gereja St Agustinus was designated.

Building Gereja St Agustinus faced hurdles. But persistent efforts paid off. On June 30, 1994, a milestone was reached. The Air Force Chief of Staff, Marsekal TNI Rilo Pambudi, laid the first stone. Mgr Valentinus Kartosiswoyo joined him. A year later, on July 29, 1995, the church was complete. Marsekal TNI Rilo Pambudi and Archbishop of Jakarta Mgr Leo Soekoto inaugurated it. Mgr Leo Soekoto blessed Gereja St Agustinus.

Gereja St Agustinus became an official station on November 1, 2013. A significant moment occurred on September 13, 2020. Archbishop of Jakarta, Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo, declared Gereja St Agustinus a parish. It became the 68th parish in the Archdiocese of Jakarta.

Mass is held here regularly. Daily Mass takes place in the morning. Weekend Mass is on Saturday afternoons. It is also on Sunday mornings. The liturgy is in Bahasa Indonesia.

Gereja St Agustinus features a special place. It has a replica of the cave where Mary lived. This is the Mater et Magistra Grotto. Father Aloysius Suyoto blessed it on April 30, 2005.

Many who attend Gereja St Agustinus are members of the Indonesian Air Force. This influences how the church is run. Traditions from the military affect its operations. Hierarchy and other military customs play a role.
