“A church built on faith and perseverance.” That’s the story of Gereja Sola Gratia in Jakarta. Gereja Sola Gratia wasn’t always in this permanent location on Jalan Kebon Bawang XIV. The congregations of GMII Tesalonika and GMII Filipi, which later merged to form Gereja Sola Gratia, initially held services in a rather unusual spot: a glass-walled multipurpose room within the Klender Apartments. This room, primarily intended for funeral preparations, served as their temporary sanctuary. Imagine transporting all the necessary equipment from a member’s home before each service, only to pack it all up again afterward. This went on for years, from 1997 until they finally realized their dream of a dedicated place of worship. In July 2010, the yearning for a permanent home led to the formation of a building committee. Their first step was acquiring a two-story shop-house in the Malaka Country complex in Pondok Kopi for 1.2 billion rupiah. The committee diligently made monthly payments of 8 million rupiah. Through renovations and improvements, the shop-house became their church in October 2013. Gereja Sola Gratia continued to grow and evolve in its new location. The church, now under the leadership of Pastor Franklin Hattu, continued fundraising efforts for further renovations, including plans for a third-floor pastor’s residence. Gereja Sola Gratia continues its mission, a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of its congregation. Their journey exemplifies the power of community and the enduring spirit that transforms challenges into triumphs. Today, as you stand before Gereja Sola Gratia, remember its humble beginnings. It serves as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of faith.
