Stepping inside Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus, imagine the humble beginnings of this vibrant community. In 1948, two couples, Tan Wang Kwie and his wife, I Heng Nio (also known as Ruth Uriatie), began sharing the Gospel in the Jatinegara Timur area of Jakarta. They held prayer meetings in homes, spreading the message of Jesus Christ. Their ministry was simple. Yet their faith and the stories of healing drew many to believe. As the congregation grew, the need for a dedicated space for worship became apparent. Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus needed a home. Lacking funds, the community turned to prayer. Miraculously, Go Kim Nio, an aunt of Tan Wang Kwie, offered the front porch of her home at 89 Jatinegara Timur. This became the first sanctuary for Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus. Starting with just eight people, the congregation blossomed. The porch services evolved from prayer meetings into full church services, including Sunday school for children. By the early 1950s, another miracle unfolded. Go Kim Nio donated land beside her house. The land was specifically for building a proper church. Although funds were still scarce, the congregation persevered. Through unwavering faith and personal sacrifice, the first church building of Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus was erected in 1951. The building was modest. But it represented a triumph of faith. In the same year, Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus officially registered with the Indonesian Ministry of Religion. This solidified its place in the religious landscape of Jakarta. In 1965, the church hosted its first major assembly. Congregations from Mojokerto, Jati Pasar, Krian, Kertosono, Surabaya, and Magelang joined the growing fellowship of Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus. This marked the beginning of a new era for the church. The church continued to flourish under the leadership of Tan Wang Kwie until his passing in 1966. He left a legacy of faith and dedication. Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus continued its remarkable journey, expanding its reach. This growth included the establishment of the Immanuel Bible School in Mojokerto in 1967. The school played a vital role in training future church leaders. The church also opened branches in new regions. This began to include some failures, like the expansion efforts in South Sulawesi in 1970. But there were successes too, such as the establishment of branches in North Sumatra in 1972 and Riau in 1974. Gereja Sidang Jemaat Kristus stands today as a testament to the power of faith. It is a symbol of community. The church serves as a reminder of the humble beginnings from which great things can grow.
