Whispers of faith echo through the years, carried on the winds of change that swept across Indonesia. Here, before the Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia, those whispers become a resounding declaration. Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia’s story is inextricably linked to the life of its founder, Reverend Evangelis Renatus Siburian. His journey began as a humble graduate of Bible school, sharing the gospel from house to house, village to village, across North Tapanuli and then throughout North Sumatra. He faced numerous trials, even missing the deaths of three of his children due to his tireless dedication to spreading God’s word in remote areas. He was imprisoned by the Japanese for his beliefs and ostracized for his unconventional teachings, which challenged existing doctrines. But Reverend Siburian persevered, undeterred by the scorn and obstacles. Some even accused him of starting a new religion, calling it “Siburianism,” because wherever he preached, hundreds were baptized. Villages flocked to his open-air revival meetings, held in fields, markets, and public spaces. These meetings were followed by lively Q&A sessions about Pentecostal teachings and the Bible. Mass baptisms, often numbering between 100 and 1200 people, took place in rivers, ponds, and lakes, spectacles witnessed by crowds. It’s said that some baptized were simply curious passersby, drawn in by the Holy Spirit’s presence. Reverend Siburian’s baptismal work was so extensive, he was assisted by 4 to 12 other pastors during these ceremonies. Despite his remarkable influence, Reverend Siburian remained a humble and unassuming man, known for his strict discipline. When urged to write a biography, he simply replied, “Everything I have done is fully recorded in heaven.” He chuckled when another pastor, whom he had baptized and mentored, claimed to be the sole pioneer of Pentecostalism in North Sumatra. Reverend Siburian never sought fame; his focus remained on his calling. He was born on October 19, 1914, in Paranginan, North Tapanuli. He was the sixth of seven children. His older brother also became a Pentecostal pioneer in North Tapanuli. His wife, Mrs. Siahaan, faithfully stood by his side, raising their four surviving children. He attended English school from 1921 to 1930. He graduated from the Embong Malang Bible School in Surabaya in 1936, where he studied under Reverend W. Patterson. He converted while working for the NKPM oil company in Palembang from 1931 to 1935. His life’s calling led him to leave his job and attend Bible school. In 1937, while awaiting his preaching permit, he evangelized in Karo, partnering with Reverend Purba after returning from Malaysia/Malacca. His work with the Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia began in earnest in 1942. Faced with the need for a formal structure to accommodate the growing number of converts, he formed the “Gereja Pentakosta Tanah Batak Tapanuli.” This coincided with the transition from Dutch to Japanese rule, a period he saw as pivotal for religious freedom in Indonesia. The church was independent, not affiliated with other organizations. By 1944, its reach extended beyond Tapanuli, leading to a name change at a synod to “Gereja Pentakosta Sumatera Utara.” In 1945, he registered the organization with the Indonesian government. His vision expanded beyond regional boundaries to encompass the whole of Indonesia. In 1948, another synod resulted in the final name change to “Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia.” Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia stands as a testament to Reverend Siburian’s unwavering faith and commitment. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the enduring presence of the Gereja Pentakosta Indonesia.
