Stepping inside Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya, one can almost feel the echoes of its rich history. This church, located in the heart of Surabaya, has been a cornerstone of the Pentecostal community since its inception on February 25, 1964. Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya, often abbreviated as GPPS, was founded to serve the broader Christian community, with a special focus on Pentecostal churches. It aimed not only to spread the Gospel but also to nurture education through Bible schools and other Christian educational institutions. The church’s story is intertwined with the life of its founder, Pdt. Ishak Lew Lewi Santoso. He began his journey in Indonesia as a merchant, his work bringing him to Surabaya, where he developed a deep affection for the people and culture. His life took a dramatic turn in 1933 when he converted to Christianity and joined the GPdI church on Jl. Rajawali in Surabaya. Inspired by Evangelist Van Gessel, Pdt. Santoso transitioned from a life of commerce to one of ministry. Starting in 1942, he embarked on a mission to establish outposts for spreading the Gospel across East Java, including Sepanjang, Malang, Lawang, Madiun, Krian, and eventually back in Surabaya. This led to the establishment of the Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia Cabang Sawahan Surabaya in 1946. Over time, this church, known as Gereja Pantekosta Sawahan, flourished, witnessing a spiritual revival marked by miracles and a growing congregation. Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya continued to grow under Pdt. Santoso’s leadership. Even in his later years, he shepherded over 36,000 members, oversaw social and educational institutions, and held the esteemed position of Chairman of the GPPS General Assembly across Indonesia. The Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya stands as a testament to his dedication and vision.
