From humble beginnings in 1974 it blossomed. Gereja Pantekosta Jakarta GPJ started in an old church building. Most of the congregation were elderly. The building was simple. It wasn’t even called Gereja Pantekosta Jakarta then. Mother Ester Lie began pastoral ministry there. Many challenges arose. Church leaders disagreed. The treasurer absconded with funds. Land ownership was unclear. Finances were limited. Yet God intervened. He gradually expanded the ministry. He entrusted it with new members.
In 1983 Mother Ester boldly renovated the pastor’s house. This took a year. She established Yayasan Pendidikan Kristen Syalom in 1984. She saw the congregation’s need for education. After the pastor’s house she tackled the church building. It was dilapidated. With faith she started renovations despite lacking funds. God provided. He prepared people to help. By 1991 the church was complete.
In 1994 Mother Ester officially renamed the church Gereja Pantekosta Jakarta. It gained proper legal status. In 1999 she appointed Pastor Ronny Tanujaya. He became associate pastor. He assisted with the growing ministry. God’s hand continues to guide GPJ. New ministries have been added. GPJ now has branches throughout the area.
