Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Jakarta, Gereja Masehi Advent stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Gereja Masehi Advent traces its roots back to the mid-19th century Millerite Movement in the United States. This movement, led by William Miller, captivated the hearts and minds of many with its fervent anticipation of Jesus Christ’s return. Gereja Masehi Advent, officially established in 1863, found its way to Indonesian shores in 1901, taking root in the city of Padang, West Sumatra. The church’s presence in Jakarta is a significant part of its Indonesian story. Gereja Masehi Advent distinguishes itself through its observance of the Sabbath on Saturday, the seventh day of the week. This practice, rooted in the belief of God’s creation and redemption, shapes the rhythm of life for its members. Friday evenings are marked by families gathering in prayer and song, welcoming the Sabbath. Saturday evenings conclude with expressions of gratitude. The Sabbath is devoted to worship, whether at home or in church, visiting the sick, and engaging in acts of service. Gereja Masehi Advent has a global presence, boasting over 21 million members. This makes it the twelfth largest religious body worldwide and the sixth largest international religious body. The church operates a vast network of over 7,500 schools, more than 100 healthcare institutions, and publishing houses around the world. Additionally, Gereja Masehi Advent is actively involved in humanitarian aid through the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). The Jakarta Conference, reorganized in 2024, oversees a significant portion of the church’s activities in the region. Covering Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, and parts of West Java, the conference serves a large and diverse population. As of June 30, 2024, the Jakarta Conference encompassed 116 churches with a membership of 30,723. The church’s commitment to education is evident in its extensive educational system, considered the largest Protestant educational system globally. From primary schools to universities, Gereja Masehi Advent emphasizes holistic development, nurturing intellectual growth and a spirit of service. In Jakarta, the church maintains an active presence online and through various social media platforms. This allows them to connect with their community and share their message of faith and hope. Gereja Masehi Advent invites those seeking spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of God’s word to join their community.
