Did you know that this very spot once housed a World War II concentration camp? This is the Gereja Maria Bunda Perantara Paroki Cideng a Catholic parish church in the heart of Jakarta. It stands as a testament to resilience and faith built upon the grounds of a dark past.
The Gereja Maria Bunda Perantara Paroki Cideng wasn’t always the beautiful church we see today. Its story began not as a grand edifice but as a small chapel. The need for a place of worship in central Jakarta grew. The parish of Santa Theresia in Menteng saw this need. They decided to build a chapel in the Cideng area. This humble beginning marked the first step in the church’s journey.
From 1946 to 1950 Franciscan friars served the chapel. Then in 1953 the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus MSC took over. They inherited a site with a complex history. This area was a former concentration camp a grim reminder of the war’s brutality. The priests and parishioners chose to transform this place of suffering into one of hope and faith.
Construction of the permanent church building began in 1973. It was completed a year later. The church received its own baptismal records in 1975. On June 8 1975 Archbishop Leo Soekoto SJ blessed the new building. This momentous occasion marked the church’s official opening. It became a full parish in 1977. Father Ignatius Soesilo Soewarna MSC became the first pastor. He played an integral role in its establishment and growth.
Today the Gereja Maria Bunda Perantara Paroki Cideng continues its ministry. Daily masses are held in Indonesian. There are also English-language services. This church which was built on the site of a concentration camp now serves as a beacon of hope. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It embodies the spirit of transformation a place where sorrow has been replaced by the beauty of God’s grace. It’s more than just a church it’s a symbol of resilience renewal and hope.
