Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel

Gazing upon Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. This Catholic parish church, nestled in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, stands as a testament to faith and community. Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel, officially known as Gereja Paroki Maria Bunda Karmel, Tomang, is under the Archdiocese of Jakarta. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Carmelite Order priests administer the church. The story of Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel begins in the 1970s. The area was initially part of the Santo Kristoforus Church in Grogol. Discussions between the Carmelite Order and the Archdiocese of Jakarta led to the idea of a new parish. The chosen location was Tomang Barat, in the Tomang City Garden area. In 1972, Governor Ali Sadikin issued the Principle Permit. The following year, Father Aloysius Hardowidagdo became the first parish priest. The Sang Timur School, on Jalan Arjuna Selatan, served as a temporary place of worship. In 1979, the foundation stone of Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel was laid. The church was blessed by Archbishop Leo Soekoto and inaugurated by Governor Tjokropranolo in 1980. The date, September 14th, holds significance as the Feast of the Holy Cross in the Catholic Church. Over the years, Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel underwent expansions, including a hall in 1988. The growing congregation led to the establishment of the Maria Kusuma Karmel Church in Meruya in 1993. Renovations took place in 2004, enhancing the church, rectory, and parish secretariat. An auditorium with a chapel dedicated to Saint Therese of Lisieux and an adoration room were also added. Gereja Maria Bunda Karmel stands not only as a place of worship, but as a symbol of growth, resilience, and the enduring power of faith within the community.
