From humble beginnings sprang the Gereja Kristen Jakarta Jemaat Jembatan Lima. It all started with the fervent prayers of Pastor Philip Tjendana. He felt a deep burden a longing to serve God. On Friday May 11 1983 he gathered a small group. They held a prayer meeting on Jl Krendang Timur. Only about ten people attended that first meeting.
The Gereja Kristen Jakarta Jemaat Jembatan Lima wasn’t always located where it stands today. This church’s story is one of growth and expansion. Within six months the prayer meetings grew. Fifty people were attending regularly. The original location became too small. In March 1984 the church purchased a house behind the first meeting place. This helped accommodate the increasing number of worshippers.
The congregation continued to grow reaching seventy people. In October 1984 a core group formed. They wanted to build upon the momentum. They established a Sunday school for children. They also started a vocal group. This vocal group later became the church’s youth commission.
The church’s growth was significant. By November 1985 they moved to a larger location at Jl Tambora Raya 44A. The Gereja Kristen Jakarta Jemaat Jembatan Lima became officially recognized as a congregation. This was a pivotal moment in the church’s history.
Over the years the Gereja Kristen Jakarta Jemaat Jembatan Lima saw many changes. Different pastors served the congregation. Several events marked its journey.
